Your Future Self

People tell me that they are surprised that I have something to write to you every week. I write because I’m still in the work—growing, stretching, and pursuing my own impossible possibility.
You've probably heard the idea that we only tap into 10% of our potential.
This idea haunts me.
Whether I'm journaling about my future, zoning out on my commute to NYC or getting ready in the morning, I catch myself wondering:
If I'm only at 10%, what does my 90% look like?
What could I accomplish if I could unlock it?
I went to the resident research expert (ChatGPT) and asked about the supporting research on tapping into my 90%.
This from GPT:
“Contrary to the popular myth that we use only 10% of our brains, neuroscience shows our brains are working hard all day. The real untapped potential lies not in the brain’s raw capacity, but in how much of our meaningful self-leadership, imagination, courage, and aligned action we bring to that capacity.”
It gave me a new perspective.
We don’t lack potential. We lack permission. Permission to imagine what we are capable of and align our actions with that version of ourselves. Moments when we rethink who we are, let go of old habits, and open ourselves to a wider sense of possibility are transformative, and they often reveal growth far beyond what we imagined.
You are not limited by ability.
You are limited by identity.
Change the identity, and the impossible becomes available.
I wrote about this in my book, For Success Sake! — I call them Life Leaps — the moments or seasons where you experience an identity shift. When something changes in how you see yourself, and suddenly new outcomes become possible.
When I published my book, I didn’t just gain the title of “author” — I became the kind of person who writes, completes, and shares work that matters. That shift showed up in my confidence, the way I speak about my work, and the way I define legacy.
Last weekend, my son, Jack, ran in the NYC Marathon--his first marathon.
The moment he crossed that 26.2 finish line, he was different. Yes, physically exhausted — but energetically, expanded. He had done something he believed he could do, but in the doing — the training, the miles, the discipline — he stepped into a larger version of himself. He literally is standing taller.
Jack & Katie
As a spectator, I watched thousands of runners of all ages, shapes, circumstances, and stories. Some were running with wheelchairs. Some with canes. Some in costumes. Many with visible disabilities. Some holding each other up. I'm still emotional thinking back.
It was deeply moving.
I was struck by the fact that we humans can become anything we want when we commit.
Anything.
No matter the circumstance.
We can decide to expand, change, or create a new identity in pursuit of an 'impossible possibility,' --if we let go of the fear that keeps us safe and let in the possibility of who we could be.
Running a marathon is considered impossible for most people. Especially first-timers. Most only run 4–5 miles consistently before training for the marathon.
To go from 5 miles to 26.2 miles is not 100% growth…
not 200% growth…
It is 424% growth.
That is doing the impossible.

Those incredible achievers are no different from you and me.
They made a decision.
To imagine it was possible first.
And then to train for it.
To become someone new in the process.
I won’t be running a marathon anytime soon, but watching Jack reminded me:
My 90% is waiting for me.
Not to be discovered — but to be decided.
I believe we are happiest when we are working toward something bigger than we currently believe we are capable of. When we stretch the edges of who we know ourselves to be.
Every single person with a bigger vision for their life also has an inner knowing that it is possible.
(Yes — you.)
Read that again.
If you knew you had only scratched the surface —
If you knew you were nowhere near your full capacity —
What becomes possible from here?
Not how will you get there — the “how” always reveals itself.
The question is:
Who are you becoming?
Are you willing to imagine that a bigger version of you already exists?
Maybe this is the week you choose to believe there is more for you.
Not someday.
Now.
Your 90% is waiting.
Running for MOM! So proud.
