Run Your Own Race

If you’ve watched the Kentucky Derby, you’ve seen horses wearing a blinker or blinder. The blinder focuses the horse’s sight forward and blinds them from the surrounding competition and getting spooked.

Wearing a blinder can help you lead yourself and not be distracted by others.

When you 'Run Your Own Race' you wear blinders to lead yourself first without the distraction of others.

Running your own race starts with knowing your finish line. Elementary, yes, but I often see people striving toward goals they have not fully defined.

Running your own race means focusing on your journey, your progress, your goals, your growth, and improvement rather than comparing yourself to others.

Comparison is a measurement of your success based on your assumption that someone else is doing what you want but ‘better,’ ‘faster,’ 'greater.'

Measuring success through comparison is a personal fight for enough-ness. When the word enough appears in your thoughts, ask yourself if you’ve defined ‘enough.’ Most do not.

You are enough.

Looking outside yourself to measure success is a toxic exercise that stops your race.

You are the only one to judge whether you are enough.

What is your enough? Decide that and don’t waiver unless you choose to based on what’s best for you, not because of what someone else is doing or outside expectations.

Comparison is a double-down on doubt that suffocates.

Comparison is a buffer that separates you from your purpose.

Don’t confuse comparison with learning. I often look to others to see how I can grow, but the minute it becomes a measuring stick that calls up shame and blame and not enough-ness, I know I’ve crossed over to the comparison spin cycle.

Let them be them, and you be uniquely you.

As written in The Gap & The Gain, comparison puts you right into the gap where you are lacking and needing instead of present and wanting.

It doesn’t matter who is in front of you, behind or beside you.

Running your own race recognizes that success is subjective and personal.

Define your achievement measures.

Resist being swayed by what others are doing.

Don't get deterred by the opinions of others.

'Someone’s opinion of you is none of your business.'

Running your own race reminds you to stay focused on yourself and your journey rather than trying to match or surpass others.

All that matters is you.

Along with knowing and defining your finish line. And deciding on the strides, energy, and focus to get there.

Put your blinders on.

Success is not somewhere out there.

It’s inside of you, waiting for you to take action.

Run your own race!
